A Devon man stars in a newly-released DVD extolling the benefits of workplace learning.

Unionlearn's film crew spent a day on location at Torquay's Princess Theatre, chatting to chief technician Martin Roberts about training up new staff.

Martin said: "It's about inspiring people, opening doors, getting them to take up different opportunities they might not have thought of, or thought they might not be able to do.

"Learning has changed my life completely. I used to come to work, do the lights or sound and then go home again. Now I spend at least half my time trying to organise training or getting money for training for people and I get a great amount of enjoyment out of it.

"It's something special when you see someone learn something new. It makes you feel special too."

The 18-minute DVD, launched tomorrow (Friday, April 25) during the South West TUC's Annual Conference in Croyde Bay, also features unionlearn's Regional Manager Helen Cole, who said: "This excellent production shows exactly why workplace learning is such a success for trade unions - because it gives members the chance to learn new skills and create new opportunities, while giving employers the benefits of a happy, motivated and productive workforce.
