Devon County Council's 'Join your library' campaign has been declared an outstanding success with over 13,000 new members joining up in the first three months of a year-long push.
As part of its wide range of events to mark the National Year of Reading, the Council's libraries service launched a major membership drive in April.
This included a competition to find the youngest library member - won by a six-and-a-half-hour-old baby - a membership incentive card scheme and a 'sign up on the spot' stall at Devon County Show.
Now the latest figures have been released and show an increase of:
· 339 new members in April
· 2075 in May
· 982 in June
This is an overall increase of 34 per cent in new members over this period compared to the previous year, said the county council.
Executive member for culture, Councillor Sheila Hobden, said: "Well done to all our library staff for their hard work on this campaign - the results speak for themselves.
"Around the country, library membership has been falling over the past few years. We are delighted to be bucking that trend along with other library services in the UK as part of the National Year of Reading 2008 membership campaign.
"Of course we want the figures to continue their upward trend and hope more new people come and discover modern libraries for themselves. They boast a huge choice of books, DVDs and CDs to hire, computers, events and activities including many for children, reading groups and more."
New membership promotion, including the incentive card scheme, will take place at the following shows throughout the summer:
Kongomana Youth Festival on the July 25.
Mid Devon Show July 26
North Devon Show August 6
Honiton Show August 7
Kingsbridge Show September 6
