A club that has been teaching the children of Topsham to swim for generations is urgently appealing for more people to volunteer as instructors.

Topsham Swimming Club has been running at the town’s open air pool for 35 years, and will return for another season on May 6.

However, the club is desperately short of instructors – and if new volunteers do not come forward may struggle to continue running two sessions a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Ideally the club is looking for level one and two qualified instructors, but any offers of help would be welcomed.

Derek Whittingham, who has been with the club since it was founded, said: “Anyone who wants to come, we can give them training.”

Derek’s wife Dot, also a former instructor, said that a major attraction of volunteering was the satisfaction of teaching children how to swim.

Derek added: “The children we taught to swim 30 or 35 years ago now bring their children or grandchildren.”

The club, which is purely involved with teaching rather than competitive swimming, welcomes children from Topsham, but also Exmouth and Exeter.

It teaches them the basics of swimming, along with life saving and personal survival.

For more information or to volunteer, call Derek on 01392 876520 before May 6.
