Dave goes for third marathon record dressed as pirate

Exmouth marathon man Dave Stone is going for a record-breaking hat-trick in this weekend’s London Marathon.
Dave, 43, of Normandy Close, will be running the race dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean films – with the aim of running the fastest ever marathon by someone dressed as a film character.
Dave’s latest record attempt follows his feat last year of running the fastest marathon dressed as a book character, when he ran as Dracula, and in 2011 becoming the fastest superhero, which he achieved dressed as Superman.
The current record for a film character stands at two hours, 53 minutes and 54 seconds – 11 minutes slower than Dave’s time from last year.
However, the record is not a foregone conclusion, as Dave says his pirate costume will be tougher to run in than the Dracula outfit.
He said: “The costume’s got the beard, coat, belt and cutlass – it’s a proper costume, so it’s a bit more bulky to run in. I’m hoping for a time around two hours 45 minutes.”
Each year Dave, a member of Exmouth Harriers, combines his record attempt with charity fundraising, and this year he is collecting donations for Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare. A collection box has been placed at Kings Garden Centre, where Dave works.
Visitors to Kings can also take part in a competition to guess Dave’s finishing time. It costs £5 for two guesses, with a prize from the centre up for grabs for the closest guess.
