I would like to congratulate Exmouth councillors on a neatly marked cycle path along the seafront. I particularly love the way that planners have considered all its users. The 12 inches of path given to car users to enable them to get out of their cars, and the 12 inches that users of the benches can keep their feet in.As a cyclist, I back any initiatives to make cycling safer. Cycle routes and cycle paths are a fantastic idea. I used the Exmouth to Lympstone path last week - very impressive and enjoyable. However, this seafront cycle path is absolutely ridiculous. As a family of five, plus dog, walking along the seafront, we have to walk into the cycle lane each time someone is walking towards us in the opposite direction. I have watched with horror, as families of small children struggle to empty and fill their cars, at the same time trying to keep the children out of the way of cyclists. I have been watching people walk on to the cycle lane, without looking behind them, just to make way for people walking in the opposite direction. It is clear to me that someone is going to be seriously injured very soon. Was the opposite side of the road ever considered for this cycle path? It seems to be the obvious solution to me - more space available, safer and no walkers.Amanda Rogers(by email)
