AN Exmouth town councillor returned to her job of representing Brixington last week after a life threatening illness - and praised hospital staff who saved her life.

Councillor Maddie Chapman who bounced back from the illness she contracted in June, and attended her first meeting - the planning committee - last week.

She had spent time in intensive care - but she had nothing but praise for the staff of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

She said: "It was a frightening experience but the doctors and nurses of accident and emergency and the wonderful staff of the intensive care unit were absolutely first class. Without them I would not be here today.

"It is always easy for people to knock the NHS and its staff, but lets be honest we all need them at some point and they do a difficult and demanding job.

"I have nothing but admiration for them and would like to publicly thank them."

Maddie has returned to council duties and is looking forward to being fully involved in the Brixington community again.
