Council needed the new chairs

I take strong exception to Heather Lane s questioning if £5,000 of taxpayers money is legitimate spending on councillors bottoms.

I take strong exception to Heather Lane's questioning if £5,000 of taxpayers' money is legitimate spending on councillors' bottoms.

Not one of us 25 town councillors claims the annual allowance or any expenses we are entitled to have.

The previous chairs were in use prior to 1972 by the Exmouth Urban District Council - the bottoms were out and the leather badly cracked.

Forty chairs cost £4,255; our declined allowances alone could have paid for 66.59 chairs.

The council chamber and committee room is hired most days by different organisations and they are entitled to decent seating.

If Mrs Lane had been elected last year, she would have preferred to dispose of the dangerous chairs and sit cross-legged on the floor, I assume?

Councillor May Hardy,

67 Salisbury Road,

Exmouth.
