would like to congratulate the powers that be at Exmouth Town Council for the effort they put into this year's Christmas Cracker, possibly the best event Exmouth has seen in years, apart from the Tour of Britain Cycle Race this summer.
But there still seems to be a few important factors the town council are missing. As an Exmouth event, the local traders should have filled the central ‘market place’, rather than being seconded to the perimeters of the fair.
I understand the council started off charging so much, many Exmouth businesses were put off until, in the end, the council got professional, out-of-town set ups in at a fraction of the pitch charges they had originally offered to the local businesses of Exmouth.
At a recent town council meeting, Conservative town councillors suggested local businesses were lavishly frittering money on advertising their businesses and that, if they could afford to advertise, they could afford to pay an additional levy on their business rates - ie the BID. The figure of £45 was quoted as a cost for advertising, when, in actual fact, dear councillor, advertising is more in the region of £180 per advertisement.
This misinformation and ignorance towards what is required to run a small business is symptomatic of the arrogance and disturbing lack of empathy from our elected town leaders.
We hear on the news everyday of despot rule being challenged around the world and the abuse these leaders impose on their people’s in the name of control and authority. Exmouth seems no different. The people have indicated their wishes regarding both The Strand development and the BID scheme, but our rulers do not listen and, instead, continue to pursue unsupported developments and trample over their community in the meantime.
What shameful, ignorant behaviour! The world is experiencing significant change at present and this old style rule is becoming outdated. Our council needs to move with the times and modernise their approach. If a bunch of youths continued to act in an anti-social manner, they would be given an ASBO. Perhaps that’s what our town council needs.
