I read with interest, and some satisfaction, your article 'Shellfish Factory Closed', Exmouth Journal, January 29. However, the article omits the years of concentrated effort by Littleham residents, local councillors, and district councillors. The smell from this fish factory has plagued residents of Littleham and surrounding areas for approximately 20 years, in spite of many complaints to Environmental Health. During the last year, a series of actions were initiated by residents and councillors which involved keeping daily records of the level of smell; liaising regularly with environmental health; appealing directly to the executive board of the district council under the new legislation which commenced in August 2008; and speaking to the factory owner to advise him of the effects of the smell on local residents. This action was carried out in a responsible and reasonable manner at all times.Sara Randall-Johnson, EDDC leader, and Jill Elson, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Health, gave support, as did senior environmental health officers who attended a meeting of Littleham Residents' Association and promised further action. The smell which affected so many people in the area, so frequently, was agreed to be unacceptable. There is still action to be taken but I feel this is a good example of how residents and councillors can work together within the legal limits to tackle problems and produce results which benefit all.Marian ScottLittleham Resident
