Community thanked as new Men’s Shed opens in Exmouth

A new Exmouth community facility has been officially opened by a popular Devon broadcaster.
Celebrity Judi Spiers was on hand to cut the ribbon at the new Men’s Shed workshop.
The building, next to Clayton House Community Centre, off Salterton Road, is the result of more than six months of work by Men’s Shed members - and is twice the size of the group’s previous facility.
The Men’s Shed, run by Open Door Exmouth, was launched in January 2014, following a grant from The People’s Health Trust, to create an environment for men to build friendships while learning and sharing practical skills and working on projects for the community.
The opening of the new workshop was attended by more than 100 community representatives, including Open Door Exmouth staff and trustees, councillors, representatives from East Devon District Council, several local businesses and Men’s Shed members, who were all thanked for their support.
Peter Chalkley, who along with Mick Cox is Men’s Shed project leader and Open Door Exmouth trustee, said: “It has been a real team effort that has been wholeheartedly supported by the community, for which we are truly grateful. It is a great feeling to see the finished workshop that the men themselves have built.
“It is a fantastic achievement. We are all very proud. We’ve had great fun celebrating today and Judi has been fantastic in coming along and supporting us. Thank you to everyone who came and who has shown their support.”
The Men’s Shed is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, between 10am and 4pm, and men of any age and background are welcome. For more details, call Peter on 07710 599742, or visit Men’s Shed Exmouth on Facebook.
