A TOWN centre home will be converted into a new community hub for people with learning disabilities.

Devon County Council has rubber-stamped permission for 12 Hartley Road to be converted into offices for support staff, a hub and facilities for counselling.

Parking to the rear and side of property has also been given permission

County learning disability services are currently based in two buildings, The Doyle Centre in Salterton Road and The Beach Hub in Victoria Road.

The property at 12 Hartley Road will bring both services under a single roof and once conversion work has been competed will be open on week days from 8am to 5pm.

The new centre will cater for an average of 15 clients and seven full time and seven part time staff.

A spokesman for the county council said: "The premises at the Doyle Centre are not a suitable location for those who now attend day care services or for the activities provided for those supported.

"The Beach Hub does not have the capacity to meet all eligible individuals' needs.

"The situation leaves people with more complex needs within the old decaying building and creates a distinction for the most disadvantaged group of people which is proving extremely stressing for them and difficult overcome.
