Exmouth Community College's chair of governors has been named as Exmouth and District Rotary Club's citizen of the year.

Elizabeth Lee received the honour at the Rotary Christmas lunch, having had no idea she was in line for the award.

The club presents an award annually to a person who is judged to have made a significant contribution to the local community

She has been a governor at the college since 1994 and has been the chairman of the governing board since 1997.

Announcing the award, club president Norman Hawkins paid tribute to her work on behalf of the college and outlined her commitment and support, not only to the college itself, but also to working with the principal, Tony Alexander, to improve things still further.

Receiving the award, Mrs Lee thanked the club and paid tribute to Mr Alexander and the way in which he had instilled pride into the pupils, saying the college’s success was mainly due to his efforts.
