PEOPLE living in Exmouth are being warned against firing emergency flares for fun during bonfire night celebrations.

Portland Coastguard said red parachute flares are maritime distress signals and are not to be used as fireworks.

A coastguard spokesperson said: "The firing of these when not in distress constitutes a hoax and as such, offenders are liable to prosecution.
