TOPSHAM councillor Andrew Leadbetter has been appointed to the conservative leadership team at Devon County Council.

Mr Leadbetter, who represents the town and St Loye's, has been named cabinet member for personnel, performance and IT.

The conservatives took power at County Hall earlier this month for the first time in 20 years with 41 seats of the 62 on the authority.

Cllr Leadbetter, who retained his seat in the county elections on June 4, was unveiled as part of the nine-member cabinet last week.

"It has always been a pleasure to work for, and help, the residents of Topsham and St Loye's, and to be involved with all the schools and associations in the ward," he said.

Speaking after his electoral ward-win, he added: "I'm delighted to have been re-elected, with all but 50 per cent of the vote, which must mean I'm doing something right - or trying to do my best."

The leader of the council will be John Hart, who represents Bickleigh and Wembury, and will chair the cabinet and be responsible for communities.

His deputy, John Clatworthy, from Dawlish, will be deputy leader and oversee finance and property.
