Potential tenants of council houses will have to start 'bidding' for properties under a new scheme launched this week. From Monday, June 2, it became easier for potential tenants to find out what properties East Devon District Council has available to let. The council will be running fortnightly advertisements in the press giving details of the number and type of properties it has that are empty and ready for letting. Similar information will also be available in local libraries and on town and parish notice boards. In future, if anyone wants to be considered for a tenancy of one or more of the properties, then they need to let the housing needs team at the council know by 'bidding' for it. By calling (01395) 571512, potential tenants will be able to listen to a recorded message giving details of all the properties currently available. The callers will then be given instructions telling them how to leave a 'bid'.The advertisements and recorded message will provide information on the type, size, location and other features of the accommodation as well as the rent chargeable and any service charges. Applicants will need to meet the requirements of the band for that property and will be given seven days to place their bid.In its effort to be as open as possible with its lettings policy, the council will publish details of properties that have been let, along with the housing registration date and banding of the successful applicant.
