THERE were some shock results at Newton Poppleford Carnival on Saturday, including Sidvale Carnival Club being knocked off its top spot by young farmers. With a clean sweep of firsts and best in shows up until the weekend, Sidvale's slick Mickey's Express was forced into second place by the spooky Halloween float of Axminster Young Farmers.Comic underdogs, so far this season, Nunsford Nutters CC kicked rivals Nymphos into touch with Hey Big Suspender.Sidvale CC secretary Marion Perry said: "It's the judges' opinion. It may not be our opinion but so be it. That is Newton Poppleford judging. They usually put the cat among the pigeons!"With a cup for the float with most carnival spirit, the club was not too concerned at its second in the open section, despite wins and best in show cups at Seaton, Colyton and Axminster so far."It is not too serious and the children like it, it has worked very well," said Mrs Perry."I thought Saturday's carnival ran very smoothly and what we like about Newton Poppleford is we can see the best of the other floats."Newton Poppleford carnival chairman Jackie Barnard said: "Different judges have different ideas of what they like."She said not all the judges were local and none judged floats from where they lived."It was a lovely evening, which made a difference," she said. "We had about 23 floats and 14 walking entries with lots of people watching. "The local cricket and tennis club entries were very comical and the atmosphere was brilliant, everyone I've spoken to thought so."Money collected will be used to help organise next year's carnival, which costs about £3,000 for the village to stage. Results: Best in procession - Nunsford Nutters CC.
