EXMOUTH and Budleigh Salterton retailers are being urged to be vigilant following a spate of credit card and driving licence thefts.Thieves have been stealing from staff rooms in East Devon's health centres and hotels, entering 'staff only' areas and swiping the valuables, leaving behind purses and wallets.Detective Constable Merrett from Devon and Cornwall Police said the thieves would be likely to then contact owners of the cards through the work number - claiming that they are from the bank's fraud office. He added: "They will inform the owner that the card has recently had some 'unusual' activity, confirm some details from the driver's licence and ask the owner to pass over their PIN number so the card can be cancelled. "Once they have the PIN number they will drain the card."He said that anyone who then gets called by their bank requesting a PIN number should 'terminate' the call and dial 1471 making note of the number. This should then be reported to the Police immediately, contacting DC Merrett at Devon and Cornwall Police on (08452) 777444.
