A CAMPAIGN to stop cuts to the region s night-time Search and Rescue services was backed by the town hall this week.

A CAMPAIGN to stop cuts to the region's night-time Search and Rescue services was backed by the town hall this week.

Exmouth Town Council has backed Ilfracombe Town Council's campaign to stop RAF Chivenor's SAR being reduced from round-the-clock cover to just 12-hour cover.

Cllr Eileen Wragg said that Chivenor was the second busiest RAF SAR unit, with a third of callouts at night.

Back up would be at RNAS Culdrose but there are concerns that the extra half-hour flying time could put lives at risk.

Cllr Wragg said: "What could be the implications if the chopper was already on a night-time mission?"
