Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority is set to recruit new firefighters to its ranks.As part of a new recritment campaign, it will allow retained firefighters to transfer to full time vacancies.It is the first time the service has enabled retained firefighters to make such a move.The aim is for new full time firefighters to start next spring.The service has also said it remains on track to deliver the savings forecast in its business plan produced for the project when the two counties' services combined in April 2007.a spokesman said: "The projected underspend for the financial year 2008/09 of just over £700,000 has, in part, resulted from savings in pay costs, which have arisen from a large number of retirements. "In addition we have attracted increased training business."Chief Fire Officer Paul Young said: "The service has managed its budget to enable us to maintain a robust financial position. We aim to use all our resources in the most effective way to ensure the safety of the public.
