Here we go, a debate on oxymorons. Can Tim Ellis state 'Why should we stop campaigning "for the sake of our local economy"? We are campaigning for the sake of our local economy! Could he please explain in his 'eloquent words' how campaigning against a supermarket, that will possibly bring in upwards of 100 jobs, be for the sake of the local economy? Your letter reeks at worst of contradictions and at best starry eyed romanticism. I should imagine you do manage to visit the town on occasion and see the amount of businesses closing down. Please give us an alternative if you have one. Better still try opening a business on Exeter Road and see how long you last. This town needs an injection of life, we need to encourage tourists and young people to live here, before we become another Budleigh Salterton. Take a walk around the town at night in the week, it's empty, shops are closed, pubs are empty and students are rare. In the present economic climate, surely it would make sense to encourage businesses to our town, to provide jobs and, in turn, create a level of competion for the likes of Tesco or Somerfield.
