THE postmaster of Newton Poppleford and his family were tied up by burglars who stole thousands of pounds in an early morning raid today (Tuesday).

THE postmaster of Newton Poppleford and his family were tied up by burglars who stole thousands of pounds in an early morning raid today (Tuesday).

Three men wearing balaclavas and gloves tied the hands of all family members with cable ties and tape before stealing around �12,000 from the safe.

Police received a 999 call from the postmaster at around 2am reporting the attack.

All family members were unhurt and police launched a massive search for the three men using the force helicopter, firearms and dog unit.

Despite an extensive search the suspects have not yet been located.

Patrol, CID and Scenes Of Crime Officers are at the Post Office and a further detailed crime scene examination will take place soon.

The first suspect is described as around 5ft tall, slim build with a foreign accent, which is possible Eastern European. He was wearing dark blue overalls and a balaclava.

The second man is around 5ft 2 inches tall, of slim build and was wearing similar clothes. He also had an accent but it was not strong.

There is not an in-depth description of the third man but it is believed he is around 5ft 11 inches tall.

The first man is thought to be in his late 30s and the others are described as slightly younger.

All men were wearing black gloves and trainers-one pair of the trainers has silver strips on the heels.
