The chairman of Budleigh Salterton’s carnival committee hopes the event can be made ‘bigger and better’ ahead of this year’s parade.

Speaking at a meeting of the town council, councillor Mike Hilliar told members that the committee was concentrating on building on last year’s inaugural event but are looking to expand in the future.

At the meeting, councillors voted to give £250 in grant aid to the carnival committee ahead of this year’s event in September.

This will be the first Budleigh carnival since the town was given a place on the East Devon Circuit – meaning more floats from across the district will be taking part.

Cllr Hilliar said: “At the moment we have a small committee of eight of us so we’re focusing on building on last year’s success and to make sure this year is every bit as good.

“The hope in the future is that there will be more people wanting to help. We wanted to make it bigger and better.”
