Budleigh Salterton’s former sorting office looks set to be transformed into a pub after fresh plans for the site were backed by town leaders.

Previous proposals for the site were quashed by district council planners following concerns over a proposed first-floor balcony becoming a ‘smoker’s paradise’ and the effect it would have on neighbours.

But updated change-of-use proposals for the disused High Street building, which have removed the balcony, were welcomed by the town council’s planning committee.

Speaking after the meeting, committee chairman councillor Alan Dent, said: “To have a good quality pub restaurant in High Street will be a real plus for the town. At present we have two pubs – the Salterton Arms and the Feathers.

“The option of an independent pub-restaurant to complement the Slice of Lyme and the Taj Mahal will offer Budleigh residents a real choice.”

At the meeting, councillors also asked for conditions to be placed so that a first-floor fire escape to the rear does not become a smoking area.

Committee members were also keen to see the King George VI coat of arms, which currently sits above the main entrance to the building, retained and refurbished.

Mayor councillor Tom Wright added: “The town council has always supported the plan to turn the old sorting office into a bar/restaurant.

“Our objection was only in connection with the plan for a ‘beer garden’ on the outside terrace at the rear, which is very close to a bedroom window of the flat next door.

East Devon District Council will have the final say on the plans.
