Royal British Legion members of the Budleigh Salterton and district branch have returned from a pilgrimage of Remembrance to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

Major Ziggy Fec of the Royal Marines and Lt Col Tony Bennett from the Light Infantry joined thousands to attend the WWI commemorations; the pair toured some of the same battlefields and cemeteries in Europe visited by those on a 1928 pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres with their branch standard and a wreath.

Tony said the trip was ‘a particularly poignant experience’ because his father had fought with the 1st Battalion, The Somerset Light Infantry at Ypres in 1914 and 1915.

Tony Bennett laid a wreath at the Menin Gate on behalf of the Budleigh Salterton, East Budleigh and Otterton communities. The wreath had message written by the children of St Peter’s and Drake’s Primary Schools, thanking the soldiers for their sacrifice during the war.
