The organisers of this year’s Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival have revealed this year’s line up. And it’s an exciting programme which brings a mix of internationally recognised authors and speakers, alongside brilliant children’s events and workshops. Chair of the Festival, Sue Briggs, brings us the latest news.
Darcey Bussell, Celia Imrie, Richard Dawkins, Jacqueline Wilson… what an amazing privilege to be able to bring these world-renowned authors to our town. Hopefully you’ve seen (in this very paper) that we’ve announced this year’s festival line-up.
It’s an incredible mix of the interesting, entertaining and thought-provoking and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back in person. Dig into the programme and you’ll find some real gems, like local writer Sarah Bussy talking to Brook Gallery owner Angela Yarwood about the one of our town’s most famous names, cartoonist and painter Joyce Dennys. Joyce produced illustrations for Punch and The Sketch and created what are now iconic World War I recruitment posters. The event and sale of Sarah’s book will raise funds for the Fairlynch Museum.
This is also the first year we’ve collaborated with Budleigh Music Festival, and we’ve got a stunning event in the glorious setting of St Peter’s Church. Leading screen and stage actress Joanna David will be reading poems and writings of wartime, to mark 80 years since the Second World War. She will be accompanied by the L’Ondon Ensemble led by Sacha Rattle.
We’ve also got a fantastic range of events for children and families, from the brilliant Jacqueline Wilson to the authors of the Adventures on Trains series Sam Sedgman and MG Leonard and model making workshops from the brilliant Aardman Animations. Martin Brown, the face behind the iconic Horrible Histories animations will be sharing the stories behind the pictures. There will also be a fun filled weekend of activities all themed around Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and a chance to meet the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts. We can’t wait to welcome you all back!
