A BUDLEIGH Salterton family's campaign to stop a garden development from going ahead has won the support of the town council.

This week Budleigh Salterton Town Council failed to back an application to build a three-bedroom home in the garden of 9 Vales Road.

Pensioners Roy and Mary Morris, of Granary Lane, whose home backs onto the site, and their daughter, Lynnie Jolly, from Totnes, have spent the last six months battling against the application - believing it will set a 'dangerous precedence' for back garden development in Budleigh.

Lynnie Jolly said her father, who is recovering from a quadruple by-pass, was in tears, over the application.

On Monday the town's councillors failed to support the plans.

Members said the proposal was an overdevelopment of the site and detrimental to neighbouring properties' light and privacy.

The council said the plot size was unsuitable for any development.

Score of letters were received by the town council objecting to the plans.

The application will go before the district council for a full decision.

Councillor John Shiel said: "This is the worst sort of cramming. It's trying to cram another house into an area that should have a garage on it.

"It's going to affect the whole area if it's allowed to go ahead and it's going to look totally out of character."

Last July the Morris family organised a campaign and drummed up local support to block an application to build a four-bedroom home on the site.
