THE police are warning people to be on their guard against bogus callers after homes in Budleigh Salterton were targeted by a company claiming to be a meter registration scheme.

The company, which calls itself the Meter Registration Service, has been telephoning homes and asking for meter readings and bank details.

The police said the calls are a scam and people are being duped into handing over their personal details.

Budleigh Salterton police community support officer Malcolm Maguire said the spate of calls follow in the footsteps of a similar scam, where the caller claims to be from British Telecom and asks for bank details for non-payment of telephone bills.

The PCSO said: "When people have refused to give their details, the caller has become very abusive."

He said internet searches show the company has duped hundreds of other people up and down the country.

The PCSO said further investigations have failed to find any address or telephone number for the company.
