Not only has the date of this year’s event been announced for late September, but organisers have also confirmed that the illuminated carnival has been elected on to the East Devon Carnival Circuit.

This should mean an even bigger parade for 2018 – and future years – as floats and entries from carnival clubs across the region will now be participating, including Seaton, Colyton, Axminster, Sidmouth, Budleigh, Exmouth, Honiton and Ottery.

The good news follows the success of last year’s event, which saw the carnival revived in Budleigh after an absence of more than 20 years.

Despite inclement weather, the event drew crowds of people on to the town’s streets to see the procession, with a ‘good amount’ collected in the buckets, raising funds for this year’s event.

Budleigh Carnival secretary Julie Meredith, who is also a member of the Budleigh Carnival committee, confirmed the date of the 2018 carnival as Saturday, September 29.

“We’re hoping it will be even bigger and better than last year,” she said.

“And because it’s on the East Devon circuit, we will probably get more floats and more entries than we did last year.

“We’re also hoping that Budleigh people will come in. It was such a success last year that I think people will think, ‘Oh, it’s worth going in’.

“It was a big thing to take on to start the carnival again, and it all went well.

“So we’re very pleased, very much looking forward to this year, and hope that everybody will join in.”

News that Budleigh Carnival had got the green light from the East Devon Carnival Circuit came during the Carnival Circuit’s presentation night in December.

“They did very well last year and have been elected on to the East Devon circuit,” said Jackie Barnard, an East Devon Carnival Circuit Committee member.

“The floats that enter the East Devon Circuit commit to doing all the carnivals on the circuit,” she said.

“So that’s Seaton, Colyton, Axminster, Sidmouth, Budleigh, Exmouth, Honiton and Ottery. Each of the floats enters all the carnivals.”

Planning for the 2018 Budleigh Carnival is currently at an early stage.
