A Budleigh Salterton teenager has become the youngest person to DJ on BayFM, a year after joining the station's training scheme.
Tom Hartnell, 14, of Bedlands Lane, who also runs a mobile disco, started his fledgling broadcasting career making internet podcasts with friends from a makeshift studio, using a laptop and a microphone.
Last year, the Exmouth Community College pupil joined the BayFM ‘radio club’, which allows students to go to the station once a week for training.
Pupils get first-hand experience of using sound equipment, as well as learning about how a radio show gets put together.
Tom hosted his first show on Saturday and hopes the slot will lead to more radio work. He said: “It’s very exciting for me and I’m a little bit shocked.
“Since I have started doing radio club, I have really been interested in it. It would be good to study radio a little bit more.”
Tom will be hosting a regular show on Saturdays at 2pm, playing a mix of old and new music and taking requests from the public.
Station manager Andy Green said: “He has come through the radio club and progressed to be doing his own show on Saturday afternoons.
“I just think he has got something. He is a confident kid and also runs his own mobile disco.
“Tom’s just someone who stands out – with a bit of training, he’ll come on well.
“I think it is good if you can bring on talent and give them a bit of a chance.”
