Sarah Thorpe, who now lives at Abbeyfield Shandford, in Station Road, had told staff that she did not want any fuss ahead of her 100th birthday.

As a result, preparations for the celebration were kept under wraps and Sarah was surprised by friends and family turning up from her home county Derbyshire.

Surrounded by her loved-ones, a celebratory lunch was organised at the Budleigh care home and she was toasted on her birthday by town mayor Alan Dent.

Raine Pym, administrator at Abbeyfield Shandford, told the Journal that Sarah was ‘thrilled’ with the party.

Raine added: “She is such a sprightly lady, it is hard to believe she is the incredible age of 100.”

Sarah, known as ‘Lorne’, has been a resident of Abbeyfield for the last 18 months.
