TWO pot holed sections of the B3178 near Budleigh Salterton and East Budleigh are going to be repaired.

The road, at Blueberry Down Budleigh Salterton, and Frogmoor Road to Pulhayes Farm, East Budleigh, has scores of pot holes mostly caused by the harsh winter.

They are among series of urgent road repair schemes identified by the county council who will receive a slice of a Government winter damage grant.

The grant from the Department for Transport will help the County Council fund 35 schemes, patching or resurfacing around 70 miles of road across the county.

Roads are being targeted where maintenance carried out now can protect them from further deterioration.

The funding is in addition to Devon County Council's 7million programme of repairs which is currently underway on its 8,000-mile highway network to deal with the damage caused by the harsh winter. Around 70,000 potholes have been filled since the start of the year - more than 30,000 of those since April.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: "We have received this grant to repair roads that have been damaged by the winter, and while it may only help us fix a small percentage of our roads, we are putting the money to good use where it can have the most impact. The roads being targeted may not be those that have suffered the most, but this is the best use of this funding to enable us to cost effectively repair and protect more of our network.

The County Council has to provide evidence to the Government as to where the money has been spent and how those roads were damaged by the winter weather.

Potholes and safety defects on the county's roads can be reported online at www.devon.gov.uk or by calling 0845 155 1004.
