Officers said the woman who reported the theft cannot remember where she last saw her purse.
PC Simon Evans said: "She is unsure of where she left it as she had been shopping in Budleigh Salterton and Exeter and at some point her purse has gone missing.
"She is unsure of the details so enquiries are continuing.
