A memorial plaque on The Green in Budleigh Salterton has been restored, thanks to the town council.

Councillor Courtney Richards said he noticed that the marble stone which commemorates the Burma campaign during World War Two has sunk into the earth, to the point where it was virtually covered. He brought this to the attention of Budleigh Salterton Town Council, which agreed to pay for the building of a small plinth to raise the memorial to where it could be easily seen by people using the nearby footpath.

Cllr Richards said: “Coincidentally it was shortly after Remembrance Day when I saw the stone. I was saddened to see it in such a state, given the sacrifices that had been made by our forces in the Burma campaign.

“I have tried, without success, to contact any local Burma Star Associations in the area but so many have closed given the number of years that have elapsed since the end of the war.

“At least now the plaque is properly displayed and hopefully anyone who was either in the campaign, or who had a relative in Burma, will know that their efforts are still remembered.”
