BUDLEIGH in Bloom has thanked the Journal for its help recruiting new members and sponsors keen to help the town retain its award-winning floral displays.

The bloom group last week held a committee meeting, where the members revealed the new planting season would be shortly underway.

The recruitment drive was prompted by East Devon District Council's recent announcement it was to scrap funding Budleigh's floral displays and flower beds in a bid to save cash.

Budleigh in Bloom chairman Pat Prew said the town had already begun to swing into action with this year's Britain in Bloom entry.

She urged residents to support the town's efforts by taking part in this year's gardens competition, to be judged at the end of June.

Mrs Prew said: "We are looking forward to the new planting season and will soon be starting to take out the winter plants and bulbs.

"Any plants that can be kept for next winter will be looked after by committee members and the bulbs will all be dried out and replanted in the autumn.

"Following our plea for helpers in the Journal a few weeks ago, we have received a lot of response and some very generous sponsors. I would like to thank you all for getting in touch.

"The schools' painting competition is well under way, this year we have also included the children from Carousel.

"A member of the Budleigh Art Club will be judging the paintings and they will also be on display during Gala week."

* Entry forms for the gardens competition will be available from mid-May. Judging is at the end of June. Forms can be found at the library, the Public Hall and throughout the town. More information will be available at www.budleighinbloom.co.uk
