A 59-home development in Budleigh Salterton looks set to be named after a former GP whose family used to own the land.

The Badger Homes scheme, near the B3178, will be given the street name Evans Field when construction finishes – a reference to Dr David Evans, who used to own the field.

After the name ‘Badgers Holt’ was suggested, town councillors put forward the name as a tribute to the former GP, who was described as ‘a pillar of the community’.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) has accepted the new name after Royal Mail had ‘no operational concerns’.

A spokeswoman said: “EDDC’s policy on deciding new street names is to follow the recommendation of the town or parish council as long as the name suggested by them meets our naming criteria. Dr Evans is widely respected in the community and has been actively involved with many local charities and good causes.”
