Members of Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club could hardly believe their eyes this morning when they pulled back the curtains to see the clubhouse under water,

Only recently had volunteers totally rebuilt the clubhouse with anti-flood designs built into the plans.

But heavy rain swelled the River Otter overnight and the waters quickly reached roof level - at least 12 foot of muddy, mirky sea water lapping around the building - and invading the club's smart interior.

Club secretary Kevin Curran, of Coastguard Road, Budleigh Salterton, rang the Journal first thing this morning with the devastating news - having visited the site with committee member Mark Snow.

They were also worried for home owners living in the adjoining Granary Lane area of the town - known for flash flood in the past.
