A MEMORIAL bench was unveiled at East Devon Golf Club this week to honour the former ladies captain Josie Hall, who died in August.

The seat, which will be positioned overlooking the putting green, was presented to the club according to her wishes.

Popular Exmouth hotelier Josie ran The Royal Beacon Hotel and then Alliston House Hotel for a total of 30 years.

A brass plaque on the bench has her name inscribed as well as that of her late husband veteran News of the World journalist Roger Hall, who famously broke the John Profumo story.

Josie was the founder member of a ladies golf group who met at The Manor Hotel in Exmouth called 'To the Manor Born.'

And she was also captain of the Ladies East Devon Golf Club in 2000 while Roger was men's captain in 1994.

The bench was presented by executor of the will, Ron Morrison-Smith to club chairman Bill Peaker and club captains Hilary Shiels, Alan Dent, Lesley Hall and Mark Hall.

Bill remembered Roger as a contemporary of his father who was captain of the men's team in 1956: "The bench will face west where the sun sets and will overlook the putting green.

"It's a lovely bench and will give a great view and give people lots of enjoyment looking out onto the 16th and 17th fairways."

Ron added: "Josie was very active and excelled at sports. More recently a typical day for her would be golf in the morning, bowling in the afternoon followed by bridge in the evening!
