THE standard of work on display at Budleigh Salterton Art Club's 2009 exhibition has been praised by an internationally-renowned artist.

Art club president Alan Cotton, from Colaton Raleigh, said the paintings on display at this year's exhibition were of a 'terrific' standard.

His comments came during the club's recent preview evening, which was opened by chairman Nicky Carson.

She thanked everyone who had worked hard to make the 2009 exhibition a success.

And the club members were praised for their talented contributions. The evening was attended by score of well wishers and the town mayor, councilor Courtney Richards.

The week long exhibition was held at the Public Hall, where there more than 200 framed pictures and a variety of 3D works on display, as well as many unframed pictures.

A landscape pastel painting by Paul Hardy was offered as the prize for the charitable raffle, in aid of the Alzheimers Society.

This year's judges were Alan Cotton, Priscilla Hull, John Hammond, artist, and Michael Lambert of Beer Marine Gallery.

Winners:

Alan Cotton Trophy for the best oil painting: J Lester for 'First Born'

Beryl Hammond Award for the best painting with a floral theme: J Ashbee for 'Spring Wood at Golitha Falls'

Joyce Dennys Bowl for the best human interest painting: J Falby for 'Ann'

Prescilla Hull Trophy for creative arts: N Rogers for sculpture 'Occasional Table', stating 'why should Damian Hurst have all the fun!'

Prescilla Hull Trophy for 3D work: M Norman for 'All that Jazz'

Cecil Elgee Memorial Award for the Judges choice: B Hewett for 'Parrot in Conversation'

Les Ransley Memorial Award for the best line and wash: B Covey for 'Salcombe Regis'

Dorothy Bradshaw Cup for the best watercolour or gouache: D Hill for 'Olive Grove in Tuscany'

Talisman Trophy for the best acrylic painting: C Boult for 'Dawn'
