A BRAVE Brixington woman jumped out of a plane 15,000ft above the ground and hurtled through the skies at more than 100mph - all to raise money for charity.

Kate Charlesworth, of Garratt Close, took part in a tandem skydive after taking off from Dunkeswell Airfield, near Honiton, and has raised 443 so far for Help the Heroes.

The 32-year-old chose the charity because her brother-in-law, Andrew Waiton, and a number of friends are in the armed forces.

Kate said: "Andrew has done two tours of Afghanistan now. Everytime you watch the news you hear of a family who has lost their son or they've survived but are missing limbs.

"They come back and the care isn't there for them. Help the Heroes, however, offers support, not just for their physical injuries but psychological as well.

"It's a fantastic charity. What they have done in such a short space of time is amazing."

Kate said despite having experience of working as an air hostess, she had never jumped out of a plane before.

She joked: "I like the air but had never done anything like that previously.

"It's about 100mph that you travel at once you make the initial jump and then you pleasantly drift towards the ground.

"I've been bitten by the skydive bug now and plan on doing it again!

Kate's sister, Emma Waiton, 34, of Maristaw Avenue, said: "It was a commendable thing to do.

"She paid for the flight herself and then thought anything she could raise in sponsorship, she would.
