LAW books from Exmouth have been handed over to a Ugandan university. The All England Law Reports, provided by Ashfords Solicitors, were sent to the Makerere University Law School by the Rotary Club of Exmouth and one in Marylebone.Sylvia Tamale, Dean of Law at the university, said: "On behalf of Makerere University's Faculty of Law and on my own behalf, I would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for this invaluable donation of books and look forward to putting them to very good use."The handover was carried out by the Muyenga Rotary Club, and the books will be used by the students as a resource in the university library. The ceremony took place in the university's library and received television and newspaper coverage in UgandaIt was carried out earlier this month, which was fitting at it is the Rotary Club's Literacy Month. The aim of the month, which takes place in March each year, is for clubs to raise awareness about literacy, launch new initiatives and recognise accomplishments from the past year.Rotarians are encouraged to engage in activities that specifically address literacy and education issues, either in their communities or abroad.A spokesman for the club said: "Literacy is the foundation for virtually all forms of education and a crucial component of effective social and economic participation, human development and poverty reduction."There is a direct connection between literacy rates and community health. People who are generally more aware of health concerns in their communities are therefore better equipped to avoid illness.
