While many people are debating the pros and cons of a new ASDA store at Exmouth, Tesco is planning to 'mushroom' its local operation at Salterton Road. The Tesco project will involve the demolition and re-building of a church and petrol station, together with increased parking and retail space. The cost of this sizable expansion will probably run into millions of pounds and turn the area into a building site for up to a year. It is obvious that Tesco intends funding this ambitious project by increasing its revenue from local shoppers and visitors. This means that once again local traders will see a decline in their business and more shop closures will follow. However, the Tesco expansion plan depends on the Glenorchy Church trustees and whether they are prepared to make land available for this project. If Glenorchy Church trustees wish to dispose of surplus land, why not make it available for low-cost housing for first-time buyers desperate to get on the housing ladder?
