BUDLEIGH Salterton residents get the chance to raise cash for cancer sufferers later this month.

Cancer Research UK's Big Breakfast takes place on Saturday 23 May - thanks to a dedicated group of fundraising volunteers.

They are donning aprons and cooking up a bumper feast for all those who come along to Budleigh Salterton Public Hall.

Cancer Research UK is the major funder of cancer research in the UK universities, medical schools and institutes.

It supports doctors' nurses and scientists in more than 35 cities and 80 leading academic centres across the UK, including clinical trials taking place here in Devon.

Projects supported in the Devon area include researchers in Exeter who are co-ordinating a vital clinical trial to test the best way of treating a type of lymphoma - cancer of the immune system.

Chairman Jolyon Hunt said: "We are extremely lucky because local businesses have donated a lot of the food for the breakfast, which means that we raise optimum funds."

He thanked M J Baker Ltd of Newton Abbot, Porky Down and Tesco at Exmouth, Mark Barrett, Random Poultry, High Street fruit and veg shop, Hawkins Coffee, The Lawn Bakery and West Country Milk Consortium of Budleigh.

"I do hope people will come along and join us for a very enjoyable morning, while raising much needed money," he said.

"Last year we raised almost 1,000. Big Breakfast in Budleigh is something not to be missed; there is always a great atmosphere."

You can order your Big Breakfast from 9am onwards with last orders being taken at 11.30am.

On offer for a bargain price will be a full English breakfast for 5 or Coffee or Danish pastry for 2.00.
