MORE than 20 local businesses were represented at the Exmouth Town Management annual meeting and forum, held at the Devon court Hotel on Thursday.

The event reports on the activities of the partnership board and the work of the town management team, and for the first time this year was open to any business operating from, or holding interests in the town.

The town manager, Tony Collins, presented his report and answered questions from the businesses present about regeneration and the role of the various councils in how this is being planned and delivered.

Keynote speaker Jeremy Filmer-Bennett, chief executive of the Devon and Cornwall Business Council, delivered an informative and entertaining presentation on the challenges facing small businesses in the current economic climate, while suggesting a number of ways in which smaller businesses could help themselves over the coming months.

Partnership chair Ivor Bull said : "I had the privilege to take over as chair of the partnership earlier this year.

"I am the first chair for Exmouth from the private, business sector. I believe this demonstrates the growing importance being placed on the business community and its role in the changes planned for the town."

The board is keen to improve the numbers of businesses attending such events and will work with the chamber of trade and other business groups throughout next year to ensure that the 2009 open forum offers something of interest to the widest possible business audience.
