BICTON Gardens staff were presented with an unusual request when Kate and Stuart Watson, from Newton Poppleford, asked them to save their dog.

The pair had been walking their pet Jack Russell, Chas, around the gardens when the terrier decided to take a dip in the lake.

When the dog was attacked by an angry swan, Bicton College outdoor adventure instructor Justin Nicholas came to the rescue putting a boat out onto the lake.

But before the dog could be rescued, Chas made a bid for freedom and made it back to the bank unaided.

Owners Stuart and Kate said Chas was a 'bit of a character' and vowed to keep their pet on a lead during future walks.
