A family of Devon-based meerkats are enjoying their new identities after a competition was held to decide on names for the animals.

The Bicton College meerkats arrived at the start of the year and to celebrate the new additions the public was asked to come up with names.

After a busy term, the chosen meerkat names were announced at the annual award ceremony for the Animal Care students.

The long-awaited names are ‘Tosko’, ‘Matata’, ‘Azizi’, and Timon, who is the alpha male of the group.

Bicton College, based near East Budleigh, would like to thank everyone who entered the competition for their creative and amusing name suggestions.

The meerkats joined more than 300 other species of small animals residing on Bicton College’s grounds.

A spokesman for the college said: “They have settled in very quickly in the college environment, loving the attention from the students and really enjoying the feeding and enrichment provided in their new home.”
