The most common tactic fraudsters used last year to try to con Devon residents’ out of cash was to offer a ‘free’ trial.
A Freedom of Information request from Devon County Council revealed that in 2015/2014 there were 1,137 scams across Devon, up 90 on 2012/2013.
The most-used scam was a free trial with hidden charges – this tactic was used 109 times.
Other scams included advertising, offering to stop cold-callers, PPI claims, fake ‘official’ web sites, cash prize letters and accident claims.
A spokesman for Trading Standards said: “It would be wrong to say that residents are falling victim in any greater numbers than anywhere else. We believe the rise in reported scams is largely due to the fact that we’re deliberately targeting scams to raise awareness of the problem, and we are working with a range of partners to identify the most vulnerable and prolific victims to offer support. ”
