A la Ronde is this week celebrating the stinging nettles as part of Be nice to nettles week, May 22 to 30.

Lesley Strong, property administrator said: "The nettle is often seen as a weed, but it is a really amazing plant with many uses. "We retain nettles around the perimeter walk at A la Ronde because they are crucial to the life cycle of many butterfly species, providing habitat for egg laying and the caterpillar stage of the insects development.

"When the sun is shining on a still day the meadow is alive with butterflies flitting from flower to flower and it is a great place to relax and spot the different species that visit us here'."

In keeping with the theme of the week, A la Ronde's tea rooms will be serving nettle soup.

Those who arrive using green transport will be offered a free cup of nettle tea.
