A pet dog turned hero, protecting its family as they slept, when it chased off a burglar from a home in Brixington.
Detectives said a laptop and tablet were stolen from the home in the early hours of Saturday, October 15, but were found dumped in the street nearby.
Police at Exmouth have released a partial description of the intruder.
The burglar is described as a white man with short, brown, thin hair. He was short in stature.
Detectives are urging residents to secure doors and windows at all times.
Police want to hear from anyone with information about the burglary. If you saw someone acting suspiciously in the Brixington area at the time of the crime, contact Exmouth CID.
Detective Constable Damien Randall said: “In the early hours, an intruder entered a house in the Brixington area of Exmouth. The occupants of the house were asleep in the property at the time.
“However, the family dog barked, ran downstairs and the intruder made off from the property.
“It was discovered the following morning that a laptop and a tablet had been stolen from the house.
“This is a very frightening incident for the family. It is, however, uncommon for an intruder to enter an occupied house.
“It is imperative that doors and windows are secured when you go to sleep and when you leave the property.”
DC Randall added: “Both stolen items were discarded in the street and located by neighbours who returned them to the owners.
“Fortunately, the family had serial numbers for the stolen items, which they were able to provide to police.”
