RESIDENTS are on course to break the world banana-eating record this weekend, at the close of Fairtrade Fortnight.

People all over the country are taking part and Pater Brain of Fairtrade Exmouth hope that residents will scoff 1,000 bananas.

Tesco are supplying over 700 Fairtrade bananas to start the record attempt at their store on Friday afternoon.

He said: "If we have any left we take them to the Magnolia Centre on Saturday morning where there will be 300 additional bananas."

At the latest count 260,000 people are known to be taking part across the country; the aim is 500,000 in the record breaking period of Friday to Saturday.
