Plans for a new headquarters for air and army cadets in Exmouth have been recommended for approval by East Devon District Council.

The proposed new cadet centre would be built at the top of Phear Park, at the opposite end of the car park to the existing cadet headquarters, which would be demolished.

The planning application, which was backed by Exmouth Town Council in November, will be considered by East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) development management committee at its meeting on Tuesday.

In a report to the committee, EDDC’s planning department has said permission should be granted.

The report states: “The proposal will offer purpose-built accommodation for the cadets and is considered to provide a valuable new community facility.”

The proposed new building, which would be paid for jointly by the Army and the Air Training Corps (ATC), would be used by cadets four nights a week – two for the army cadets, two for the ATC – would include classrooms and IT systems for teaching, offices, and a drill hall with a shooting range.

There would also be a new parade square and parking.
